Flour Tortilla – Make at home with 15 minutes of prep time

Forget the quasi-tex mex section of your local supermarket, once you’ve tried these easy to make flour tortillas you’ll never go back.

We’ve tried quite a few recipes and this one is the best combination of lightness, flavour and foldability. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

  • Three cups plain flour
  • One tsp salt
  • One teaspoon baking powder
  • One cup warm water
  • Third cup vegetable oil

Method

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl and mix to combine everything evenly. Add oil and water to mixer at medium speed until combined or by hand until a smooth ball of dough is formed. Move to a floured surface and halve dough into 16 balls – (weigh them for size if you’re OCD like me). flatten each ball in a tortilla press or by hand as thin as possible (around 10-12cm in diameter) and allow to rest for 15 minutes.

To cook heat a large pan or skillet hot and drop each tortilla in for 30 seconds each side until small brown spots appear. This will take a bit of trial and error at first but you’ll quickly figure out the right heat and time. Serve warm, cool for later or freeze for later on.
